      What Does Pet Insurance Cover?

      pet insurance
      by Meleah Bowles

Pet insurance can help you pay expensive vet fees in case your pet gets a disease or an injury. There are different types of insurance covers for pets and each of them has its own different claims. The type of insurance policy that you go for depends on many factors, such as how frequent your pet gets ill, whether disease outbreaks are common in your neighborhood, and climatic conditions among other factors.

      Types of Pet Insurance Covers

      Accident only

This type of insurance covers your pet in case it is involved in an accident. It covers the injuries and any harm that your pet experiences. In addition, this insurance can also help you pay for treatment of scratches and bites that your pet receives if it fights with other pets.

      Accident and illness

This insurance also covers your pet if it gets injured in an accident. In addition, this policy will also provide coverage for sickness and disease. This cover includes skin conditions, hereditary conditions, infectious diseases, and even cancer or tumor treatment.

      Comprehensive cover

A comprehensive insurance policy covers illness, routine care, and accidents. This type of cover is ultimately the best since it provides preventive health treatment. Preventive measures can include vaccinations, dental care, deworming, and even pet training. An amazing thing about this insurance is the routine care. In routine care, your pet can get a microchip or access de-sexing services.

      Veterinary Bills

Vet bills vary depending on the type of treatment that your pet gets. An insurance policy can help you pay expensive vet bills and is also useful if your pet has medical conditions that require expensive treatment.

Some Treatments Covered by Insurance Policies

      1. Hereditary conditions: they include health problems that are genetic and inherited from one generation of a pet to another.
      2. Vet fees: vet costs can include a wide range of treatments, such as illnesses, injuries, accidents, and even surgery.
      3. Long-term conditions: a comprehensive policy can cover a condition or an illness that a pet is currently suffering from. Long-term conditions also involve cancer and other deadly diseases.
      4. Breeding risks or costs: it protects your pet if you use it for breeding purposes.
      5. Alternative treatments: they include physiotherapy, homeopathy, and acupuncture.
      6. Dental care: comprehensive pet policy can cover dental illness, dental injury, and other teeth problems.

      Claims Basis for Vet Bills

The claims basis of an insurance policy usually determines how vet fees are covered. Claim basis can apply in the following ways:

      Per year

In per year claim basis, the insurance policy has a fixed amount of money for a pet. If the cost of treatment of a pet reaches the limit, the policy stops paying for the treatment until it is renewed the next year.

      Per condition

In this claim basis, there is a fixed amount of money allocated for treatment of each illness or medical condition in a policy year. There is usually no medical cover if the same illness or condition occurs again later that year until the policy is renewed.

Per condition – no time limit

This policy enables your pet to get medical treatment for an illness or a condition unlimited number of times. This policy is the best if you live in an area that is prone to a certain pet disease outbreak since you won’t pay any additional fees if you visit a vet frequently.

      Conclusion

Pets can easily contract a disease or get bitten by other pets, especially if you are living in a densely populated neighborhood with many pets. They can also break a limb if they are accidentally hit by a moving vehicle. To avoid all these problems, you need an insurance policy to guarantee treatment to your pet even if it requires expensive surgery or medication.
